Gratitude – Day 61 (Cycling)

Yesterday, I hopped on my bike for the first time this year. Kathy and I cycled down to the Rugby fields to watch Teri play Ultimate. It was the first warm sunny day in a long time so it was good to be out & about so to speak. It was fun watching ultimate, Teri is sure enjoying it.  We were getting hungry so we cycled to a number of places for a bite to eat. Most of them were closed on Sunday or at least did not open until 4:00pm. We ended up going to O’Hanlons for beer & pizza. One of our friends joined us and we had a very enjoyable visit over a couple of pints. Then came the bike ride home. We mostly came back home on side streets and back alleys. The beer & pizza does not do much for motivation, but that was not the problem. I have a very small and very hard bike seat. My rear was getting pretty tender at this point. Why is it that I always forget to wear bike shorts on my first ride of the year. Slow learner. It was a fun afternoon and it was good to get the bike out. Look forward to some cycling picnics this year. I would also enjoy a good full day rural trail ride in Saskatchewan. I may well plan a trip if I can find an easy-intermediate trail that is not a technical ride. It would be good to get a small group together for a day’s adventure.

I am thankful for yesterday’s ride and the opportunity to get out more this summer. You can drive in a city for years, but it is not until you cycle or walk that you truly discover the city you live in.

It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them.  Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.  ~ Ernest Hemingway
