Gratitude – Day 44 (Road Hockey)

This past Saturday, we organized the first Road Hockey game of the season. We played at the Hanbidge Tennis courts on Sherwood Drive,  just a kilometre from where we live. I chose to blog about this for a variety of reasons.

First and foremost, I need more exercise. I have, by and large, been leading a sedentary lifestyle. It is time to get outside and get the heart rate up. I get winded quite easily, but the group lets me take refuge in the net when I need some respite. It is an enjoyable way to get some physical activity. We are going to run Road Hockey on Saturdays, for the month of May. I just realized that I am going to miss next Saturday as I am booked into the annual FragCON gaming convention. I will have to see if Kathy wants to carry the torch on that date.

On of the other things that absolutely makes it enjoyable, is that there is a great group of people that want to come out and play. We had 11 people come out for our first game of the season. Having between 8 and a dozen is just right. Looks like it will be a well attended outing again. Being a group organizer is easy when you have great people who want to attend. Takes the work out of organizing.I suspect when June hits, we will move the road hockey to Tuesday Nights again. That will cut into some of my boardgame time, but I guess that shouldn’t be a problem. Need to get a bit more active.

Lastly, I want to highlight the great attitude of the event. No one is too competitive. Everyone that shows up is very respectful of the age, gender, and capability of everyone else. Everyone gets passed too and the kinds are coached on fair & fun play. We do not keep score, the emphasis is on the fun & the exercise. It really is a great group dynamic.

Street hockey is great for kids.  It’s energetic, competitive, and skilful.  And best of all it keeps them off the street.  ~ Author Unknown
